Ice dam leak repair

Drying the ceiling and wall the ice dam leaked into, and fixing why it formed.

What this covers

An ice dam forms when snow melts on a warm roof, runs to the cold edge, and freezes into a ridge that holds water back under the shingles. The water finds its way into the ceiling and walls below. The service dries and repairs the interior, and looks at the attic insulation and ventilation that let the roof get warm in the first place, so the dam does not return next winter.

When to call

  • Thick ice along the roof edge or in the gutters with icicles below it.
  • A ceiling or wall stain near an exterior wall that appears in winter.
  • Water dripping from a window frame or soffit after a thaw.

What to expect

  1. Stop the water safelyNobody goes on an icy roof. If the dam is still active, the company removes it from the ground or with proper staging.
  2. Dry the insideWet ceiling and wall materials are opened or removed and the cavity is dried with equipment until moisture readings are normal.
  3. RepairCeiling, wall and trim are patched and painted once dry.
  4. Address the causeThe company checks attic insulation, air leaks and ventilation and recommends what would keep the roof cold.

Questions people ask

Can I chip the ice off myself?

Chipping ice damages shingles and climbing an icy roof is dangerous. Leave the ice to a company with proper equipment, and read the safety steps if water is coming in now.

Will it happen again?

If the attic stays warm, yes. Air sealing, insulation and ventilation are what keep the roof cold enough to prevent dams. Those are separate services the company can describe.

Is the roof damaged?

Often not. The water gets under the shingles without breaking them. A roofer can check the edge once the ice is gone.
