What this covers
Homes built before the 1980s often contain asbestos in pipe insulation, floor tile, mastic, ceiling texture, siding and plaster. It is safe while undisturbed and hazardous when cut, sanded or demolished. Abatement tests suspect materials, seals the area under negative air pressure, removes or encapsulates the material with licensed workers in full protective equipment, disposes of it as regulated waste, and takes clearance air samples before the area is reopened.

Questions people ask
Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?
Intact, undisturbed material is generally not releasing fibers. The hazard comes from cutting, sanding, breaking or demolishing it. Leave suspect material alone and have it tested before any work.
Can a regular contractor remove it?
No. Abatement requires licensed workers, containment and regulated disposal. A certified company brings a licensed abatement crew.
Do I have to leave the home?
For small, contained jobs often not. The company tells you based on where the material is and how the home's air moves.
