A technician in gray workwear slides a fresh pleated filter into a new high-efficiency furnace in a clean basement mechanical room, a sealed sheet metal plenum and white PVC vent pipes beside it

Heating, cooling and air quality

What each heating and cooling service involves, from a new furnace to a sealed duct run, and what to expect from a certified company.

Heating and cooling is the equipment in the basement or closet, the outdoor unit beside the house, the ducts between the joists and the thermostat on the wall, all working as one system. The pages below describe each service: what it is, how a technician approaches it, and what separates a system that is sized, sealed and commissioned properly from one that merely runs.

After a loss, the system is often part of the rebuild: a furnace that stood in floodwater, ducts that carried soot through the house after a fire, a condenser crushed by a fallen limb. A certified company recovers refrigerant, removes what cannot be saved, and installs and tests the replacement, pulling permits where the local code requires them.
