A small hall bathroom with a white alcove tub fitted with seamless soft white solid-surface wall panels, a corner caddy shelf and chrome trim

Tub surround installation

New walls around the tub, fitted tight and sealed at every seam.

What this covers

A tub surround is the wall finish around an alcove tub. It can be a set of solid-surface or acrylic panels, a one-piece unit, or tile over backer board and a membrane. The installer removes the old surround, checks the framing and backing for water damage, replaces what is soft, and makes the walls flat and plumb. Panels are cut for the valve and spout and bonded in place; tile is laid out and set. Seams, corners and the joint at the tub are sealed so water stays on the face.

When to call

  • Caulk that keeps failing or tile that loosens around the tub.
  • Soft or stained drywall at the edge of the surround.
  • A dated surround you want to replace without replacing the tub.

Questions people ask

Panels or tile?

Panels have few seams and are quick to clean. Tile gives more choice of look and layout. Both work when the wall behind them is sound and properly sealed.

Can a surround go over the old tile?

Some panel systems allow it when the old tile is solid and flat, but removing it lets the installer see and repair any water damage behind it.

Does the tub have to be replaced?

Not usually. A sound tub can stay in place while the walls around it are replaced, as long as the edge where they meet can be sealed properly.
