What this covers
TPO is a white thermoplastic single-ply membrane common on commercial roofs and flat residential additions. The roofer lays insulation and a cover board, rolls out the membrane and either fastens it in the seams or fully adheres it, then welds every seam with hot air so the roof becomes one continuous sheet. Corners, pipes and curbs get prefabricated or field-welded flashings, and the perimeter is terminated with metal edge or coping. Its reflective surface keeps the roof and the rooms below cooler. Careful work shows in seams that pass a probe test, welds without scorching or cold spots, and flashing heights that meet the manufacturer's details.
When to call
- A flat or low-slope roof due for replacement where cooling costs matter.
- An existing TPO roof with seams lifting or membrane shrinking at the walls.
- A new addition, garage or porch with a flat roof.
- Punctures or cuts from equipment service or dropped tools.
What to expect
- EvaluateThe roofer checks the deck, existing insulation and drainage, and confirms the membrane fit for the building.
- PrepareThe old roof is removed or prepared, insulation and cover board installed.
- Lay and weldMembrane is fastened or adhered and the seams heat-welded and probed.
- FlashPipes, curbs, corners and edges are flashed and the perimeter terminated.

Questions people ask
How is TPO different from PVC?
Both are heat-welded thermoplastics. PVC has a longer track record and better chemical resistance; TPO avoids plasticizers. Installation is similar.
Can a TPO roof be repaired?
Yes, while the membrane is still weldable. A patch of the same material is welded over the damage. Older, weathered sheets may need a primer or a different method.
Why do seams matter so much?
A single-ply roof is only as good as its seams. A welded seam is stronger than the sheet itself when done right, and a cold weld is a leak waiting for weather.
