What this covers
A bathroom remodel replaces fixtures and finishes, and often the waterproofing behind them. The work runs demolition, plumbing and electrical rough-in, waterproofing of the shower and floor, tile, vanity and counter, toilet and fixtures, ventilation, lighting and paint. Because so much is hidden behind tile, the order and the inspection matter more here than in most rooms.
When to call
- A shower or tub surround that leaks, grows mold or has loose tile.
- A vanity, toilet or fixtures that are worn out or dated.
- A water loss behind the walls that already requires the room to be opened.
What to expect
- ScopeLayout, fixtures, tile and finishes are chosen and written up before demolition.
- Demolition and rough-inOld finishes come out. Plumbing, electrical and the exhaust fan are roughed in by licensed trades and inspected.
- Waterproof and tileThe shower and floor are waterproofed and the system is tested before tile goes on.
- Fixtures and finishVanity, counter, toilet, fixtures, lighting and paint complete the room, then a walk-through.

Questions people ask
How is the other bathroom handled if this is the only one?
Tell the company up front. It will plan the work so the toilet is out of service for the shortest time, and tell you the dates.
Why does waterproofing matter so much?
Tile and grout are not waterproof. The membrane behind them is what keeps water out of the walls and floor. Skipping or rushing it is the most common cause of a bathroom failing a few years later.
Is a fan required?
Building codes generally require an exhaust fan vented to the outside in a bathroom with a shower or tub. The company includes it in the scope.
