What this covers
Batts are pre-cut blankets of fiberglass or mineral wool sized to fit between studs, joists and rafters. They are the usual choice for open walls in new framing, additions and rebuilds. How well batts perform depends on the fit: the installer cuts each one to the length of the bay, splits it around wires rather than stuffing it behind them, cuts neatly around boxes and pipes, and fills narrow bays without leaving voids. Batts should fill the cavity without being compressed. Faced batts are stapled to the framing; unfaced batts may get a separate vapor retarder where the code requires it.

- Open walls, floors or ceilings in a new addition or remodel.
- Walls opened to dry after a water loss that need insulation replaced.
- A room over a garage or crawlspace with cold floors.
- Interior walls or floors where you want less sound passing through.

Questions people ask
Fiberglass or mineral wool?
Fiberglass is common and lighter. Mineral wool is denser, holds its shape, resists fire and dampens sound well, so it is often used between floors and around bathrooms.
Why does a gap or a squashed batt matter?
Insulation is rated for its full thickness with no gaps. Compressed batts and small voids let heat bypass the insulation and lower its effective R-value.
Can batts be used in an attic?
Yes, laid between and then across the joists. Many installers prefer blown-in insulation in attics because it fills around obstacles more easily.
