What this covers
Attic insulation is the layer on the attic floor that slows heat moving between the living space and the roof. The installer measures what is there, looks for wet or damaged material, seals the gaps around wires, pipes and light fixtures in the ceiling, and fits baffles at the eaves so soffit vents keep moving air. Loose-fill or batts then go down to an even depth that meets the target R-value, with rulers set so the depth can be checked. A careful job also insulates and weatherstrips the hatch and keeps insulation clear of chimneys and flues.
When to call
- Insulation that is level with or below the tops of the ceiling joists.
- Upstairs rooms that are much hotter or colder than the rest of the house.
- Ice dams or uneven snow melt on the roof in winter.
- Attic insulation that was soaked by a roof leak or damaged by smoke.
What to expect
- InspectThe installer checks the existing depth, ventilation, moisture and any wiring or fixtures in the way.
- Seal and prepareCeiling gaps are sealed, baffles are fitted at the eaves and clearances are blocked around flues.
- InsulateLoose-fill or batts are installed to an even depth that meets the target R-value.
- FinishThe hatch is insulated and weatherstripped, and depth markers are left so you can check the work.

Questions people ask
How much attic insulation is enough?
The local energy code sets a minimum R-value for attics, and it varies with climate. The installer measures what is there and tells you how much depth is needed to reach it.
Does old insulation have to come out first?
Not usually. Dry, clean insulation can stay and new material goes on top. Wet, moldy or contaminated insulation, or insulation that may contain vermiculite, is assessed and removed first.
Why are baffles installed at the eaves?
Baffles hold insulation back from the soffit vents so outside air can still flow up under the roof deck. Blocked vents can lead to moisture and ice dam problems.
