Ceramic tile flooring

Glazed tile set in mortar on a rigid base, grouted and sealed.

What this covers

Ceramic tile is clay fired with a glazed surface. It is set in thinset mortar over a rigid substrate such as cement board or an uncoupling membrane, with spacers for even joints, then grouted and the grout sealed. The floor underneath must be stiff and flat, because tile cracks when the floor flexes. It suits bathrooms, kitchens, entries and laundry rooms.

When to call

  • A bathroom, kitchen, entry or laundry room floor.
  • A wish for a hard, water-resistant surface with many color and pattern options.
  • Replacing tile after a loss once the subfloor has been repaired.

What to expect

  1. SubstrateThe subfloor is checked for stiffness and flatness, and cement board or a membrane installed.
  2. LayoutLines are snapped so cuts are balanced and the pattern reads well from the door.
  3. SetTile is set in thinset with spacers and allowed to cure.
  4. Grout and sealJoints are grouted, cleaned and sealed, then trim and a walk-through.

Questions people ask

Ceramic or porcelain?

Porcelain is denser, harder and less absorbent, which makes it better for heavy traffic and outdoor use. Ceramic is easier to cut and comes in many glazes. Both are set the same way.

Why do tiles crack?

Almost always because the floor underneath flexed or was not flat. A rigid substrate and a flat base prevent it.

Does grout need sealing?

Cement grout does; it keeps stains out. Some newer grouts are stain-resistant without sealing.
