Chain-link fence installation

The practical fence: galvanized posts, a top rail and mesh pulled tight.

What this covers

Chain-link is the most economical fence for enclosing a yard, keeping pets in and marking a line. The installer sets terminal posts (corners, ends and gate posts) in concrete, sets line posts between them, runs a top rail through the line post caps, and then stretches the woven mesh along the run with a fence puller until it is taut, locking it to the terminal posts with tension bars and bands and tying it to the rail and line posts. Galvanized mesh is standard; black or green vinyl-coated mesh blends into landscaping. Careful work shows in posts that stand plumb, mesh with no sag or ripple, and gates that close square.

When to call

Questions people ask

How tall should a chain-link fence be?

Four feet is common for yards and pets; six feet is used for security and larger dogs. Local rules often limit height in front yards.

Can privacy slats be added?

Yes. Vertical slats woven through the mesh add privacy and wind resistance, and can be added later. The posts should be sized for the extra wind load.

Galvanized or vinyl-coated?

Galvanized is the plain silver finish and the most common. Vinyl-coated mesh and posts in black or green hide the fence against trees and lawn and add another layer against rust.
