What this covers
A ceiling fan is heavier than a light and moves while it runs, so it hangs from a box and brace rated for the load, fastened to a joist or to a brace that spans between joists. The electrician replaces the existing box where a light was, or runs a new circuit and switch leg to a room with no fixture, sets the downrod length for the ceiling height, hangs and balances the fan, and wires a wall control or remote so the fan and light can be run separately. Porch and outdoor fans are rated for damp or wet locations.

Questions people ask
Can a fan replace an existing light fixture?
Usually, if the box is replaced with a fan-rated one. The old light box is rarely rated for a fan's weight and movement, so the electrician swaps it before hanging the fan.
What kind of fan goes on a porch?
A fan rated for damp locations under a covered porch, or for wet locations where rain can reach it. Indoor fans corrode and fail outside.
Why does a fan wobble?
Most often a loose mount, blades out of balance or a box not rated for the load. A properly braced box and a balanced fan run smooth.
