Screened porch construction

A roofed room with screen walls, built to keep the bugs out and the breeze in.

What this covers

A screened porch is a porch with walls of screen, so it is built like a porch and then enclosed. The builder frames openings between posts, fits screen panels in a track or frame system that can be removed for repair, hangs a self-closing screen door, and closes the gaps at the floor and the eaves where insects would otherwise get in. A deck floor needs screening under the boards or a solid under-floor; a slab does not. A ceiling fan, lights and outlets are installed by a licensed electrician. Some porches are built with removable glass panels so they can be used in cooler months.

When to call

  • A deck or porch you avoid in the evening because of insects.
  • A back of the house that wants a shaded, open-air room.
  • An existing covered porch that could be enclosed.

Questions people ask

Can my existing porch be screened?

Often, if it has a roof and the posts are spaced so screen panels can be framed between them. The floor usually needs work to close the gaps.

What kind of screen?

Fiberglass is the standard; finer mesh keeps out smaller insects, and pet-resistant screen resists claws. Panel systems let one damaged panel be replaced without rescreening the wall.

Can it be converted to a three-season room?

Yes, with glass or vinyl panels that slide or clip in over the screens. Planning for them during the build makes it easier later.
