What this covers
Outlet and switch work ranges from replacing worn devices to adding outlets where extension cords live now. The electrician replaces loose, discolored or ungrounded receptacles, adds GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, basements and outdoors and AFCI protection where the code calls for it, installs USB combination outlets, dimmers and three-way switches, and runs new circuits for high-draw appliances such as a range, dryer or window air conditioner. New locations are fished in from an adjacent box or the basement with minimal patching. Each device is tested for correct wiring and the circuit's protection before the plate goes on.
When to call
- Extension cords and power strips doing the job of missing outlets.
- Two-prong outlets with no ground, or outlets that are loose, cracked or discolored.
- No GFCI protection near sinks, in the garage or outside.
- An appliance that trips its breaker or shares a circuit with too much else.
- A wish for dimmers, USB ports or smart switches.

- De-energize and openEach circuit is isolated before the old device comes out and any new cable is fished to the box.
- InstallNew receptacles, switches and dimmers are wired and fastened, with GFCI or AFCI protection where required.
- TestEvery device is tested for polarity, grounding and protection, and the circuit relabeled in the panel.

Questions people ask
What is a GFCI?
A ground-fault circuit interrupter, which shuts off power when current leaks toward ground, as it does through a person. The code requires it near water and outdoors.
What is an AFCI?
An arc-fault circuit interrupter, which detects the arcing of a damaged cord or a loose connection and opens the circuit before it starts a fire. Newer codes require it in most living areas.
Can a two-prong outlet become a three-prong?
Only when a ground is available or the outlet is GFCI-protected and labeled as having no equipment ground. Where many outlets are ungrounded, rewiring the circuits is the lasting answer.
