Aging-in-place remodeling

Changes that let someone stay in their home safely as mobility changes.

What this covers

Aging-in-place work removes the parts of a home that become hazards or barriers: steps at entries, narrow doorways, tubs that must be climbed into, slippery floors, hard-to-grip knobs and dim lighting. It adds grab bars anchored into framing, curbless showers, lever handles, nonslip floors, better light, and where needed a bedroom and full bath on the main floor.

When to call

  • A family member who finds steps, the tub or narrow doors harder than they were.
  • A wish to plan ahead rather than respond to a fall.
  • A bathroom remodel that could be made accessible at the same time.

What to expect

  1. AssessmentThe company walks the home with you and, if you have one, your occupational therapist, and lists the barriers.
  2. PlanChanges are prioritized: entry, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, lighting and floors.
  3. BuildDoorways are widened, showers rebuilt, bars anchored into blocking, floors and lighting replaced.
  4. Walk-throughThe person who will use the home tests every change before the job closes.

Questions people ask

Can grab bars go anywhere?

They must anchor into solid blocking or studs, not just drywall. The company adds blocking behind the wall where bars are planned, which is why it is best done during a remodel.

Does it have to look clinical?

No. Curbless showers, lever handles and good lighting are standard in modern design. Grab bars come in finishes that match the fixtures.

What is the first thing to change?

Usually the bathroom and the main entry, because that is where falls happen. The assessment sets the order for your home.
