Wallpaper removal

Stripping old paper and paste, then repairing and priming the wall underneath.

What this covers

Wallpaper removal strips the paper and the paste beneath it without tearing up the wall. The paper is scored and soaked, or steamed, and scraped off in sheets; the paste is washed off; gouges and torn drywall paper are repaired and skim coated; and the wall is primed so it is ready for paint or new paper. Old paper over unprimed drywall takes the most care.

Questions people ask

Can I paint over wallpaper instead?

It is possible on well-adhered paper with a sealing primer, but seams and texture usually show and the paper can bubble. Removal gives a better result.

Why is the wall damaged after removal?

Paper hung on unprimed drywall bonds to the drywall's paper face and tears it when removed. Skim coating repairs that, which is why removal often includes wall repair.

How messy is it?

Wet and messy. Floors and furniture are covered, and the room is cleaned when the paper is out.
