An outdoor kitchen of stacked stone with a granite counter, a built-in stainless grill with the lid closed, an under-counter fridge and bar stools under a covered patio behind a stucco home

Outdoor kitchens

A grill, counters and appliances built into a weatherproof base, with the utilities run to them.

What this covers

An outdoor kitchen is a counter run built outdoors with a grill and appliances set into it. The base is concrete block or a steel frame clad in stone, stucco or tile; the counter is granite, concrete or porcelain that stands up to weather. Grill, side burner, refrigerator, sink and storage are fitted into openings sized for them, with ventilation in the base for gas appliances. A licensed plumber runs the gas and water, a licensed electrician the outlets and lighting, and the company coordinates them. A roof, pergola or pavilion makes it usable in rain and sun.

When to call

  • A patio where the grill is carried out and back every weekend.
  • An outdoor dining area that wants a place to prepare and serve.

Questions people ask

Natural gas or propane?

Natural gas is run from the house by a licensed plumber and never runs out; propane uses a tank in the base or beside it. Appliances are ordered for the fuel chosen.

Can it go on a wood deck?

Sometimes, with the deck framed for the weight and a non-combustible base around the grill. A patio slab is the simpler foundation.

What counter material holds up?

Granite, concrete and large-format porcelain all do well outdoors. Light colors stay cooler in sun. The company shows samples that have been outside.
