What this covers
A pergola is an open structure: posts, beams across them, rafters across those and often slats on top for partial shade. It defines an outdoor room without closing it in. The builder anchors posts to concrete footings or to a patio with steel bases, sizes beams and rafters for the span so the top does not sag, and notches or caps the rafter tails for the look chosen. Cedar, treated wood, fiberglass and aluminum are all used; a louvered or retractable canopy top can add rain cover. A pergola attached to the house is flashed where its ledger meets the wall.

Questions people ask
Does a pergola keep off rain?
An open-slat top does not. A louvered top, a polycarbonate panel roof or a retractable canopy can be added if rain cover matters.
Can it go on my deck?
Yes, if the deck framing can carry the posts. The builder adds blocking or posts down to footings below where the deck alone is not enough.
Does a pergola need a permit?
Many jurisdictions require one above a certain size or when attached to the house. The company checks the local rule.
