An emptied kitchen with bare, level cabinet boxes and two workers in gloves and respirators carrying a section of old laminate counter out

Countertop removal and disposal

Taking the old counter out cleanly so the new one can be templated.

What this covers

Removing a countertop is more than lifting it off. Plumbing, the disposal, the cooktop and the dishwasher are disconnected, sealant and adhesive are cut, the counter is lifted in sections without racking the cabinets, and the old material is hauled away. The cabinets are checked and leveled afterward so the new counter can be templated. Heavy stone needs several people and lifting equipment.

When to call

  • A new counter is ordered and the old one must come out.
  • A water loss under a sink that damaged the counter and cabinet.
  • A kitchen rebuild where cabinets are staying and counters are not.

Questions people ask

Can the cabinets be damaged?

Yes, if a counter is pried carelessly. Cutting the adhesive and lifting evenly prevents it.

What happens to the old counter?

It is taken to a disposal or recycling site. Some stone and steel can be recycled.

Can I keep the sink?

An undermount sink comes out with the counter and can usually be reinstalled in the new one if it is in good condition.
