A tile setter pressing glossy white handmade tiles into thinset on a kitchen backsplash, spacers between rows, the counter covered

Backsplash installation

Tile or slab between the counter and the cabinets, set, grouted and sealed.

What this covers

A backsplash protects the wall behind the counter and finishes the kitchen. The wall is cleaned and repaired, the layout planned so cuts land well at outlets, windows and corners, tile or slab is set in thinset or adhesive, grouted and sealed, and the joint with the countertop is caulked so it can move. Handmade tile, large-format tile and full-height slabs each have their own layout rules.

When to call

  • A new countertop that needs the wall above it finished.

Questions people ask

Why caulk instead of grout at the counter?

The counter and wall move slightly against each other. Grout cracks there; caulk flexes.

Do outlets need to change?

The boxes are extended so the devices sit flush with the new tile. It is a small electrical task the company handles.

Can a backsplash go over an existing one?

Usually not well. Removing the old tile gives a flat, bonded base.
