What this covers
Window glass repair replaces the glass and keeps the window. In an older wood sash, the glazier removes the broken pane and old putty, sets a new pane on a bed of compound with glazing points, and tools a fresh putty line that is primed and painted once cured. In a modern window with fogged or cracked insulated glass, the sealed unit is measured and a new one ordered to the exact size and thickness, then set into the sash with new stops or tape. Tempered or laminated glass is used where code calls for it, near doors, floors and tubs. A board-up or temporary panel keeps the opening secure while the glass is on order.

Questions people ask
Can fogged glass be fixed without a new window?
Yes. The insulated glass unit is a separate part. A new unit of the same size goes into the existing sash, and the frame, trim and hardware stay.
Why does glass fog between the panes?
The seal around the unit has failed and let moist air in. Once it fogs, the unit is replaced; cleaning or drilling is a short-lived fix.
How long does glazing putty take to cure?
Traditional oil putty skins over in days and cures over a few weeks before it can be painted. Modern glazing compounds cure faster, and the glazier tells you when to paint.
