Metal siding

Steel or aluminum panels that shrug off fire, insects and rot.

What this covers

Metal siding is steel or aluminum formed into horizontal lap, vertical standing-rib or flat panels with a baked-on finish. It does not burn, rot or feed insects, and it suits modern homes and rural ones alike. The installer fastens panels over house wrap and often furring strips, uses matching trim at corners, eaves and openings, flashes every window and door, and leaves room for the metal to expand in heat. Hidden-fastener systems give a cleaner face; exposed fasteners are faster. Careful work shows in straight ribs, tidy trim, and cut edges that are deburred and touched up so they do not rust.

When to call

  • A modern design that calls for vertical ribbed or flat panels.
  • A home in a wildfire area, or one with persistent insect damage to wood siding.
  • Aluminum siding that is dented, chalked or faded and ready for replacement.

Questions people ask

Steel or aluminum?

Steel is stronger and resists dents; aluminum is lighter and does not rust, which suits coastal air. Both carry a factory finish, and the choice usually follows climate and budget.

Is metal siding noisy in rain?

Over sheathing, wrap and insulation, no more than other siding. The hollow drum effect happens only when panels are fastened over open framing.

Can it be dented by hail?

Heavy hail can mark aluminum and thin steel. Heavier gauges and ribbed profiles resist it better, and a single damaged panel can usually be swapped.
