Fire pit installation

A built fire pit, wood or gas, on a level base with seating planned around it.

What this covers

A fire pit is a masonry ring or a steel insert set in a surround, placed on a level, non-combustible base of gravel, pavers or concrete with the clearance the local code sets from the house, fences, decks and overhanging trees. Wood-burning pits are the simplest: a block ring with a steel liner and a drain so rain does not pool. Gas pits use a burner and a control valve fed by a line a licensed plumber runs from the house or a propane tank, with ventilation openings in the surround. The mason builds the surround to match the patio and plans the seating circle around it.

Questions people ask

Wood or gas?

Wood gives a real fire with smoke and ash to manage. Gas lights instantly, burns clean and can be placed closer to seating, but needs a gas line or a tank. Local rules sometimes restrict wood-burning pits.

How far from the house must it be?

Local codes set a minimum clearance from structures, decks, fences and overhanging branches. The company sites the pit to meet the rule in your area.

Can a fire pit go on a deck?

Gas pits made for decks can, with a non-combustible base and the deck framed for the weight. Wood-burning pits are generally kept off wood decks.
