Hardscaping

The built parts of a yard: walls, steps, paths and terraces in stone, pavers or gravel.

What this covers

Hardscaping is the built structure of a yard: paths, steps, seat walls, low garden walls, edging and terraces in natural stone, pavers, brick or gravel. The crew lays out the work, excavates to the right depth, and builds a compacted gravel base, the part that decides whether the surface stays flat. Stone and pavers are set over it, steps are given even rises, and everything is pitched so water runs away from the house. Taller retaining walls that hold back soil are engineered work. Careful hardscaping is planned with the plantings and drainage, not added on top of them.

Questions people ask

Why does the base matter?

Pavers and stone are only as flat as what is under them. A properly compacted gravel base resists settling and frost heave.

When does a wall need engineering?

Walls that hold back significant soil or sit near a slope or a structure often need an engineered design, and some need a permit. Where the local code requires it, the company arranges both.

Pavers or natural stone?

Pavers are uniform and quick to lay in patterns. Natural stone has more variation and a looser, older look. Both work over the same kind of base.
