What this covers
Replacing stair treads turns a carpeted or worn staircase into a finished wood one. Carpet and old treads are removed, each new tread is scribed and cut to its step, risers are fitted, both are glued and fastened, and the treads are finished to match the floors they connect. Nosings, skirt boards and returns are trimmed, and the stair is checked for even rise and run.

Questions people ask
Can treads be retrofitted over the old steps?
Yes, with retro treads that cap the existing step. They are quicker than full replacement and work when the old stair is sound.
Why are risers painted white?
It is a traditional look that makes the treads stand out and hides scuffs. Risers can also be stained to match.
Will the stair squeak?
Glue plus screws into the stringers prevents most squeaks. Existing squeaks in the stringers are fixed during removal.
