Home security systems

Cameras, door and window sensors, and alarm panels planned and installed around the home.

What this covers

A home security system is a set of devices that detect and record activity at the doors, windows and yard: door and window contact sensors, motion detectors, glass-break sensors, cameras, a video doorbell and a keypad or control panel. Installation starts with a walk-through of the entry points and the areas you want watched. The installer then mounts the devices, runs low-voltage wiring or pairs wireless ones, connects power and the home network, and tests every sensor. Whether the system is self-monitored or professionally monitored is your choice, and the installer sets it up to match.

When to call

  • Moving into a home with no system, or an old one that no longer works.
  • Wanting to see who is at the door or in the yard while you are away.
  • Adding sensors or cameras after a remodel, an addition or a new garage.
  • Replacing a dated alarm panel with one you can check from your phone.

Questions people ask

Is a wired or wireless system better?

Wired devices suit new construction and open walls; wireless devices install with little or no wall work. Many systems mix the two, with wired cameras and wireless sensors.

Does a security system need an electrician?

Battery and plug-in devices often do not. Hardwired cameras, a new circuit for the panel or wiring through finished walls is electrical work for a licensed electrician or low-voltage installer.

Who watches the alarms?

With self-monitoring, alerts go to your phone. With professional monitoring, a monitoring center receives the alarm and follows the response plan you set up with the company.
