A large stamped concrete patio patterned like ashlar slate in terracotta and gray tones with a sealed finish around a backyard dining area

Stamped concrete

Concrete colored and textured to look like slate, stone or brick, then sealed.

What this covers

Stamped concrete is an ordinary slab with a decorative surface. The pour is colored throughout or with a shake-on hardener, and while the concrete is still plastic the crew presses textured mats into it in a pattern such as ashlar slate, flagstone or running-bond brick. A powdered or liquid release agent keeps the mats from sticking and leaves the second tone in the texture. Control joints are planned to fall in the pattern's lines where possible. After curing, the surface is washed and sealed, which deepens the color and protects it. Timing is everything: the mats must go down in the window between too wet and too stiff, so the crew size matches the pour.

When to call

  • A patio, walk or pool deck where you want the look of stone without setting individual stones.
  • An entry or driveway apron that wants a border or pattern.
  • A plain slab you are replacing anyway.

Questions people ask

Does stamped concrete crack?

It is still concrete, so it can crack like any slab. Control joints hidden in the pattern and a good base keep cracking where it is planned.

How often is it resealed?

Usually every two to three years, sooner in full sun or heavy traffic. The sealer is what keeps the color deep and the surface protected.

Is it slippery when wet?

A smooth, glossy sealed surface can be. A grit additive in the sealer or a less glossy sealer gives traction around pools and steps.
