Asphalt driveways

Hot-mix asphalt laid over a compacted stone base and rolled smooth to the edges.

What this covers

An asphalt driveway is a flexible pavement: a compacted stone base carries the load and a layer of hot-mix asphalt gives the surface. The company removes or mills the old surface, grades the base to drain, compacts it, then lays hot asphalt at the planned thickness and rolls it while it is still hot so it knits together and the edges stay tight. New asphalt is soft in warm weather for a season. Resurfacing lays a new course over a sound old drive; a full replacement rebuilds the base. Sealcoating later protects the surface from sun and water. Good drainage at the edges keeps the base from washing out.

When to call

  • Alligator cracking, potholes or soft spots that come back after patching.
  • A gravel drive you want paved.
  • A driveway that drains toward the garage or a neighbor.
  • Old asphalt that is sound but faded and rough, a candidate for resurfacing.

Questions people ask

Resurface or replace?

Resurfacing works when the base is sound and the problems are on the surface. Widespread cracking, sinking or drainage trouble means the base has failed and the drive is rebuilt.

When should asphalt be sealed?

Not right away. New asphalt needs several months to cure before a sealcoat, and then every few years depending on sun and traffic.

Why does asphalt get soft in summer?

Asphalt is bound with a petroleum binder that softens in heat, especially in its first season. Turning the wheels while stopped can leave marks until it hardens.
